If you look closely at the two tone Flytefoam Propel midsole in the heel, the darker gray is much firmer, while the light gray has a little more give to it. I didn't have any issues with that but its worth noting. As much as they have very different appearances, ultimately these two shoes are very similar. Switched to Brooks. Jeff: Very similar shoes, the N23 adds some heft and a little more squish, but takes an okay ride and makes it even more okay. However, theyve begun to turn it around with some really nice releases this past year, including the ASICS Novablast, GEL-Kayano Lite, and GEL-Nimbus Lite 2. In the past, ASICS applied that line to all of its shoes, and the company got real stale. Favoring comfort over speed or weight, the Nimbus has always been well cushioned and plush, but that has made it something of a chore to run in the past. Maybe just officially rename it the Nimbus and take the Gel tag off the shoe and tweak the Flyte Foam to replace the Gel midsole and end all the stink about how heavy the shoe is! As a neutral runner who supinates, this does literally nothing for me and Id love to be rid of it (if only for the weight savings) but it doesnt get in the way like it has in the past - massive step up. Derek Li's Running Year in Review and Run Shoes of 2020: A Tough Year. I enjoy the GEL-Nimbus Lite 2 much more and have other shoes I prefer for faster paces. Maybe Jeff is missing any kind of propulsion effect of modern plated shoes. Same issue as the Asics Kayano 27 with the mid sole wearing out in super quick time. Every month we give away a pair of running shoes to a lucky reader! Its best suited to easy paces but its also capable of picking up the pace. I dont see any likely early failure points from the exposed midsole up the center of the heel to the midfoot and in the lateral flex grooves in the forefoot - the rubber outsole extends far enough to really protect the midsole. The exterior layer is a little rougher, but with no overlays except a slight buildup from the ASICS logos. document.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value", ( new Date() ).getTime() ); This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. ROBBE: I always throw all of these types of shoes into the if it aint broke, dont fix it category. If youre here, youre probably looking for a shoe that gets the job done. The areas I can mark it down for are all related to its sole: its outsole rubber wears down too quickly, its slippery on wet surfaces and its too soft for long runs. It seems a little lacking in forefoot protection, but giving it an extra 3-5mm of stack height is only going to make it heavier and even less inspiring.

I think 10.5 US would have been the better size for me. 12 Comparisons, Nike Zoom Fly 5 Review (100 km): ZoomX Core and New Plate Shifts the Focus! Because of the excellent forefoot flex the shoe feels just natural to me - besides its amount of protection and weight.

These 23s are the worst! I never had to worry about slowing down when turning corners and I never had to concentrate on striking on the forefoot or rearfoot. Named after a rain cloud, the Nimbus is supposed to be Asics softest, most cushioned trainer but the Nimbus 19 was firm, the ride was boring and it was expensive. The result is a sensation that is reassuringly bouncy with a lovely firm feel when pushing off the ground. It seems a little lacking in forefoot protection, but giving it an extra 3-5mm of stack height is only going to make it heavier and even less inspiring. He has a PR's of 4:07 marathon and 5K at 23:39. You should definitely give the Nimbus 23 a try! But the 23s are a disaster, and like you I end up suffering after a few days running in them. Not really a bad thing, but just take note this is strictly a daily trainer shoe. Nils. There are many other daily training options (including ASICS ones) that are lighter, more specific to your style of running, have newer and bouncier foams, etc. After 20 kilometres of running in the Nimbus 23, it kind of felt like I was fighting the foam: like running on a memory foam mattress that was springing back to its original position too quickly. 10 Comparisons, Brooks Glycerin 20 Multi Tester Reviews: 4 versions with energetic DNA Loft v3 supercritical foam. Robbe is the Senior Editor/Review Manager for BITR. Some shoes make you excited to put them on and go run, and this shoe didnt do it for me. The Asics Gel Nimbus 23 is a stable, every day trainer with a squishy underfoot feel that shines during easy paces. Asics claims that the Nimbus 23 has been updated to be more stable and have smoother ride transitions than the Nimbus 22. What actually helped was to use the marathon-lacing-method (not shown, using the additional lacing holes). Just my $0.02. The last Nimbus that I used was the 19th version and I was really unimpressed with it. The reason for that is probably the full FlyteFoam Propel midsole in comparison to just a layer of that softer material in the Kayano. There's a new version of this shoe! It runs smoothly, with a good balance and nice geometry, but it doesnt have a great toe-off. If youve been a Nimbus runner for some time, Id bet you are going to love this update. Approx. Not bad. I need them to support the arch and the pressure is placed on the outsides of the feet every single step. Its too weak that now its tearing apart.

The reason for that is probably the full FlyteFoam Propel midsole in comparison to just a layer of that softer material in the Kayano. It comes through both 1.5 oz lighter and more cushioned, and while the upper isnt as comfortable as the Nimbus 23, under foot it is a much better experience. Both true-to-size for me. I dont know what ASICS is measuring in regards to their stacks, but if I try to measure the midsole on the Nimbus 23 myself I can see at least 5-6mm more than ASICS is stating (15mm forefoot / 25mm heel) which likely is just the midsole stack and doesnt include the outsole and foot bed. Nils: I dont know what ASICS is measuring in regards to their stacks, but if I try to measure the midsole on the Nimbus 23 myself I can see at least 5-6mm more than ASICS is stating (15mm forefoot / 25mm heel) which likely is just the midsole stack and doesnt include the outsole and foot bed. From there I never let go. Running shoe designers take note: THIS is how you do a max-cushioned trainer upper. Jeff: Similar shoes with vastly different results, the Saucony has much more protection, and fun per step than the Nimbus. The generously foam-filled upper is the text-book max-cushioned trainer upper and its not an exaggeration when I say that its the most comfortable upper Ive ever worn. Jeff/Nils: Plush yet firm ride gives plenty of protection without making the shoe laborious, Jeff: Upper isnt overworked, really comfortable tongue, Jeff/Nils: Segmented outsole gives the shoe plenty of flex along with good durability, Jeff/Nils: Nearly twelve ounces on the scale for 10.5, and it isnt that well cushioned. I had no issues. I think their rubber formulas are along the grippiest and most durable on the market. Its weight (10.9 ounces for a mens size 9) has stayed the same for at least the last three years. I never run any of the earlier Nimbus before, but I can see why it has been around for so long. If youve been a Nimbus runner for some time, Id bet you are going to love this update.

The consumer is way more interested in durability and longevity than weight. Its perfect for those junk mileage days when you arent sure which shoe in your rotation to choose but you know you want something thats comfortable, padded and protective to get the job done. Neither shoe would be my choice for faster runs, but the Triumph is much more versatile. This one will suit you fine. ASICS is still using an external GEL insert in the heel above a layer of FlyteFoam, and overall it works well. The toebox is ample, without being incredible. Head to head against the Nimbus Lite it resembles plush, but going up against other brands' big mileage daily trainers, it approaches the firm side of things. Still. The exterior layer is a little rougher, but with no overlays except a slight buildup from the ASICS logos. ROBBE: ASICS is staying true to the Nimbus, as it should, because it probably makes them tens of millions of dollars a year. Maybe theyre bad for high arches or supination? Craft CTM Carbon Ultra Initial Video Review: A Nex Dominick Layfields 2020 Trail Run Favorites. This plush, sink-in foam sensation which is similar to memory foam, is unique to the Nimbus and unlike any other shoe that Ive tested. Cheers Robbe great review love the way liken it to stepping on the construction site My kind of language.

Its been a while since Asics took the top gong in one of our Shoe Buyers Guides but the reaction to this shoe was uniformly one of delight and this won Best In Test in our current Spring/Summer 21 Guide. My feet roll out just walking. But the more Ive run in this, the more I can say that Ill definitely pull it out when my legs are feeling beat or want a break. This can be good, and this can be bad. It is a very smooth ride for a neutral midfoot or heel striking runner. I recently reviewed the Vomero 15 and I was disappointed with it because of its firm forefoot which didnt feel like a max-cushioned trainer. All in all an excellent every day running go to shoe that can be used for training and longer races. On the run, they have comparable feel, with the N23 giving just a little more squish underfoot than the lighter Nimbus Lite 2 (. The 23rd iteration doesnt stray too far from their tried and true formula, but a combination of Gel and FlyteFoam in the midsole with a pared down plastic TRUSTIC midfoot insert makes this Nimbus the most runnable in years. Everything about it is perfection, from its true to size fit, to its spacious toe box, to its heel lockdown. Not incredible, not awful, its justfine. I have used the Venture before but the Nimbus is a great shoe for walking. I've run 4 marathons to date with a PR of 3:14:49h. I didnt have a problem with it, but people who prefer lower drops will probably pass on this. The gusseted tongue might be my favorite part of the shoe - it is on the thicker side, without going too thick, so if you need to crank down the laces, you can. You can avoid it, but you have to take care! And while the shoe didnt excite me, it sure managed to impress me. Its just a solid shoe all around. ROBBE: What do you want me to tell you? The result is a relatively bottom heavy shoe that doesnt provide that much protection, but also doesnt let you sink into it. The only major difference I could see was on the outsole. Nils: Here again I have to disagree with Jeff. "Get all latest content delivered straight to your inbox.". I have literally every pair of Nimbus. Something about the ultra plush tongue just sets the tone for the rest of the shoe, and the overall comfort. The heel counter has some exterior cladding on the medial and lateral sides, with a reflective vertical stripe up the back that has some holographic coloring. (I typically run 4-5M/day and 100+ M/month.) While I for sure think the ASICS Nimbus 23 runs just fine and smoothly I actually think that especially the toe off is outstanding for this shoe. Both fit true-to-size.
